HOUSE TRAINING YOUR
PUPPY
How
to House Train a dog or puppy
is one of the most frequently asked questions.
There
is so much conflicting advice it is difficult to know where to
go.
You've adopted a dog or you've acquired a new puppy, whichever it is you need advice on either house breaking dogs or just puppy training tips. Where do you go?
Well this is the hard bit...... WHERE DO YOU GO?
There is so much conflicting information out there where do you start?
Well, let's look at the options
There are Personal dog trainers. These are people who come to your house and give you one to one
guidance on house training your dog. They are very expensive and you would have to make sure you were at home at a specific time on a specific day. Personal dog trainers obviously know about dogs so your puppy or
dog will probably behave whilst
the trainer is there (sensing the 'Alpha male' figure) and then
misbehave as
soon as the trainer goes. If your problem is a specific one, you can't guarantee that your dog or puppy will perform the problem whilst the trainer is there!
How about Dog Training Classes? Well, firstly you have to be there every week at a set time. You may have
to fit it in with a heavy work
schedule. Perhaps you have to rush home from work, grab a
sandwich and rush down to the local Community Hall where the
classes are held? You will get fed up with the hassle, miss a
few classes and go back to square one. You also have to
transfer what you learn into ways of house breaking your
pup.
Not always easy if you are a beginner.
Next you have the Library. Here there is an absolutely mind boggling array source of puppy training tips in a mind boggling array of books, by an equally mind boggling assortment of authors, all claiming to know the only correct way to house train your dog or puppy. Which one should you choose? Without someone actually physically explaining things will you be able to understand exactly what the author dictates you should do?
Similarly, like the library, you have the Internet. Now if you are intimidated by the amount of books in the library you will be overwhelmed by the choice there is on the Internet.
The problem with the internet is that absolutely anybody can write a book on 'Puppy Training Tips' or
'House Training your Dog' and sell it on the internet. They don't need any qualifications. They might not
even have a dog...or indeed
ever had one! They could just make
it up as they go along....nobody is going to stop
them.
This is why you need advice
I have over 30 years experience in breeding and training dogs. I could sit down and write a book full of puppy training tips based on all that experience, unfortunately that is not my forte. Writing is best left
to the professionals, so I have spent hours trawling the internet getting increasingly frustrated at the
minefield of conflicting information there is on house breaking dogs.
How to paper train your puppy? Tips on house training a dog? What
about housebreaking puppy pads? Or
maybe you want to know about
litter training your pup? What about crate
training?
See? I told you it was a minefield!
Do not worry, there is
help available. I have at last found a guide worth
having. I have read it over and over again and think it is a
very clear and concise training book. The author thinks along
the same lines as me!
Well, this extremely comprehensive little guide comes directly to you via the internet so it's always there, available at the touch of a button.
Now as there are so many 'House
breaking your dog and Puppy training tips' books, what is it about
this book that caught my eye?
The guide is by a guy called Martin Olliver, who is actually a Vet. As the 'Ultimate' in the title suggests all aspects of the subject are covered in an educational way but in a very friendly manner, you know it's a bit like talking around the kitchen table with an animal behaviourist specialist who just happens to live next door.
The whole tone of the book is
friendly and informative and, most importantly, full of
common-sense advice.
No gimmicks, or too short a Question and Answer section. A refreshing change from some of the gimmicky, nonsensical advice given through poorly disguised marketing ploys.
So, what do you actually get with this book?
Firstly it explains that you
need to develop four basic tools of the trade. Common-sense and
Consistency
as well as Persistence and (most important) Patience.
There is morale boosting advice to keep you going through the training process, then it proceeds onto the most important part of House Training.
Here it gives detailed advice on three methods of house training. Direct method, Paper Training and Crate Training.
It then deals with common house-training problems like territorial marking. If your puppy or dog insists on eating its own poo then help is here. The problems are explained using case studies which makes it easier to identify with.
After House Training it moves
onto Health related problems. From congenital problems that
your pup
was born with to the problems that are disease-related and may develop later in life.
You want hassle free house training? Well the book gives you Top 10 Tips, this is a recap of what you have already read but with added practical tips and useful 'gems' of advice which comes in very handy for your training.
This little wizard of a book is very user-friendly. It is jam packed with good practical advice, yet is laid out in a very logical, easy to understand way. It also has very helpful how-to illustrations using a
little mascot called Spot-less!
Troubleshooting.
The very best part of this though...and the icing on the cake really... is a free, personalised email consultation with the team at Kingdom of Pets. So, if you need additional help with the vagaries of your own little dog's habits help is only an email away.
My Verdict.
House training a dog or pup can be a very intimidating task for most people. Martin Olliver's depth
of knowledge is very reassuring and he is very good at explaining things at a level even the greenest of owners can readily understand.
You get the main sections detailed above as well as a list of do's and don'ts. Checklists and how to deal with those little accidents. There is also a list of more helpful training aids.
A definite yes from me!
